Tape 5
Side A
Please don’t go by KC and the Sunshine Band I should say I’m not convinced that is who is singing this version of it but I know the song title is right. A brilliant mellow song that is full of meaning for the heart broken.
Do what you want
How Long by Paul Carrack. I like this song it was a slow mellow song at the time when there seamed to be a lot of high energy songs out there.
Temptation by Heaven 17. Another addictive song for me. I could never tape this song enough. I have over the years tried to get this song in Mp3 format but have always failed. If you know a copy please point me the right directions.
Sweat by Inner Circle. There is a memory with this song but it’s not clear but I feel good when I listen to this song. It’s linked to good times but I can’t put my finger on it. Perhaps there are other songs that go with this to trigger this memory. I just know for a song that really isn’t great it always makes me smile. I have to work out why!
Opposites Attract by Paula Abdul. Paula Abdul sings this with a cartoon cat. It’s a strange video, but the song isn’t that bad. Typical 80s/early 90s feel to the song and I love it.
Stand above me by OMD There are just so many songs that I enjoy, and I feel bad that I keep writing the same thing over and over again, but it’s true. This song is excellent. So full of energy and fun. How could anyone not like it.
I can’t help falling in love with you by UB40. Liked this song until I heard Elvis Presley’s version. Now don’t really like this version. Not that it’s a bad song, I just prefer the other version.
All that she wants by Ace of Base. I think this was Ace of Base’s first No 1 hit in the UK (please don’t quote me on that). I like the beat of this song as well as the tune. It’s such a different sound to a lot of the other music out at this time. I’ve noticed that I like songs that are different than the main stream, not that the main stream isn’t good, but I think it just gets boring so I go for what’s different. I also like it when music sounds like music and that there is talent there and not just vocals. All over talent.
What is Love by Hadaway. This is one of those songs that for no real reason I like. There isn’t a story behind it, it’s not my taste in music, but I really do like this song. It’s catchy, and although there are no memories with this song I always have a smile on my face when I hear it.
Can you forgive her by The Pet Shop Boys. Another song that drew me into the world of Pet Shop Boys. To this day I still love The Pet Shop Boys especially the early songs. The video to this song is very peculiar, ever 80s and very psychedelic.
Two Princes by Spin Doctors. An odd song but very enjoyable, don’t think I’ve ever got the lyrics down. Fond memories of trying to sing it on the school bus with a friend of mine, each of us with a headphone in listening to my walkman. I very much doubt many young people know what a walkman is, or what a cassette is. It’s all CDs and Mp3s these days. Oh how times change.
Prey by Take That. It’s take that do I need to say anymore. Fell in love with the boys all over again watching this video. It’s in sepia and just makes them look sexy as anything.
One Night in Heaven by Village People. I have talked a lot about village people, but this is a nice song. It really suits Heather Small’s voice.
Okay…. The last song on this side won’t have a title because I don’t know it, and I think it’s by David Morales, who created Shaggy. However 11/12 year old me only liked this song because of the lyrics ‘eenie, meenie, minie, mo that’s the way my lovin’ goes’. No other reason to like the song. However if anyone does know this song I would really like to know the title. Just for my own piece of mind.
Side B
It’s Alright by East 17. When I was growing up it was a sin to like East 17 (or E17 as they later became known) if you liked Take That. I was most certainly a Take That fan so I kept my love of E17 a secret until Take That split. I collected their works though, although I never bought their music, I would just copy it. After all I was a Take That fan and they deserved my money, E17 was a guilty secret. I couldn’t spend money on them. Oh they joys of pre-teen thinking.
Prey by Take That. See earlier in the post. However the one line that really sings out to me is ‘I’m so cold and all alone’. I always did have a soft spot for that line. I wonder if that was a sign of things to come even way back in the day. Who knows?
The One that I want by Craig McLaughlin and Debbie Gibson. At this point in my life I still liked Grease. It helped by the fact I had the BIGGEST crush on Craig McLaughlin who was in Neighbours (Henry Ramsey) and later was known for his role in Bugs. I have their version of the musical (ie the stage show) and I do prefer that version to the original film. The film I only ever watch for the fabulous, I won’t hear a word against, Stockard Channing. If there is one actress I could meet she would be it.
What’s Up by 4 Non Blondes. Although this is an old song, the memory with this song is very recent. Christmas 08 in fact. My ex-flat mate, P, and I decided to go for drinks on the 23rd Dec. I wanted to have one drink in the one town centre pub I had never drank in. This pub was in fact two doors down from where I lived. So we started there and moving on pubs kept drinking. We drank so much, played pool badly. Bitched about men, and how great it was to be sing. We ended up back in the original pub because of the live singers. We did not go to listen to them because they were good, in fact from our flat they were horrendous. So we went in to see if they were any better in person. No. The short answer really. If at all possible they were worse. P and I were rather worse for wear at this point so P and I are in stitches laughing at just how bad these singers are, and how they have their own groupies saying how great they are. The pub is packed so the singer can’t hear us, in fact as inebriated as we are, we don’t say anything dispraising too loudly. However we are in stitches. One of the songs that these singers sang was ‘What’s Up’.
I Wanna Love You by Jade. I have no idea why this song is here. I really don’t like it. My how tastes do change. It’s a pop song with a slight R’n’B feel I suppose. I want to delete it, but I don’t want to ruin my tape.
What is Love by Hadaway. Still liking this song.
Prey by Take That. Gosh I really like this song
It Keep Raining (Tears from My Eyes) by Bitty Mclean. Not the greatest song in the world but I can see why I liked it when I was younger. I think one would class this song as Pop Reggae. It’s quite something.
Disco Inferno by Tina Turner. Again the disco diva in my comes out.
In The Middle Of The Night by Billy Joel. And here starts my love of Billy Joel. This song is amazing, I love the music as well as the tune. The other song I really enjoy of his is ‘We didn’t start the fire’. What a marvellous song that is. However that’s a different story. I know that song will come up so I will leave it for then. I remember seeing the video for Middle of the Night and wondering what it’s all about. It was black and white and a woman in a white dress, and that’s all I remember. I did fall in love with the song though.
I Got The Key, I Got The Secret by The Cookie Collective this was a strange song and for years I thought this was the song that was on The Goonies, only later to realise that I was completely wrong. However there is something about this song that always makes me think of The Goonies, and it also makes me want to write. In fact listening to it right now has allowed my creative juices flowing and I can think about what I want to write in my creative writing assignment.
Tripping On You’re Love don’t know which male is singing this. Google keeps trying to tell me it’s bananarama.
Mr Vain by Culture Beat. There is an early techno group, really big in the retro clubs these days but I really enjoyed their songs and this song is no different.
Boom Boom Shake Shake The Room by Wil Smith I have a feeling he was still going under Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince.
