Can’t help myself by Joey Lawrence. I forgot that he used to be a singer. He of course stared his career off (or I certainly knew him) as Joey from Blossom. It’s a horrible song, I can’t believe I used to like it. Perhaps I was just caught up by how cute I thought he was.
Shake the Room by Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince. There is still something nice about this song.
Higher Ground by UB40. I’m not sure why I taped this song. Perhaps I thought it would be another song. I really don’t like this song, but then I’m not a really a fan of UB40, their music just doesn’t appeal to me. However I can appreciate why people like UB40. They actually sing, and sing in harmonies. There are some nice music phrases in this song. Still, don’t like the song.
Moving On Up by M People. What a storm that the M People stormed. For years it seamed no one could move or put on the radio without the M People coming at you. My mother loves Heather Small’s voice and often listens to M People because of the voice. It is a very distinct voice. I have to say I do enjoy Heather’s voice.
Go West by The Pet Shop Boys. My introduction to The Pet Shop Boys and boy did I fall hard. I, to this day, still love The Pet Shop Boys. There is something about them which is just amazing. I love their music and their sound. Neil did some work with Robbie Williams (listen to No Regret) as well as an album. I think that Pet Shop Boys are a bit like marmite, you either like them or you don’t, there is no middle ground. It has a very nice key change towards the end. The Pet Shop Boys know how to do music. I think that’s why I enjoy listening to them so much.
Faces by 2 Unlimited. This is an odd song I wish I never had to remember. It’s nothing like their song No, No, No, There’s No Limit. This came out after that song if I remember correctly, and I think their career went down the pan as well. Not worth it.
Somebody To Love by George Michael. I wouldn’t say I was a huge fan of George but there are some of his songs I do adore and this is one of them. I know it was a Queen song first, but it’s still a good song. I did love Wham.
I don’t want to fight no more by Tina Turner. One of those songs I wouldn’t pick out to listen to but if it came on the radio I wouldn’t change channels.
I have no idea what this song is called or why I thought it was a song I wanted a copy of but the lyrics are ‘You come from Earth sister or brother, you come from Earth no matter the colour’. The whole song is about the fact it doesn’t matter what your colour we are all human and we’re all the same. It’s an anti-racism song. Nice political song for the time, but it’s horrible. The singer sounds slightly flat to me. Her voice is grating.
Everybody Hurts by R.E.M. Not a lot to say about this song except I want the tabs so I can play this on guitar. I know the first couple of chords but that’s about it. There is something powerful about this song. Regardless how many times I listen to this song, I still find it takes my breath away.
Regret by New Order. I do like New Order. They do a great song called 1963 which is just amazing. New Order sound like a group who actually understands music so can write properly and enjoy what they are doing.
Nothin’ my love can’t fix by Joey Lawrence. See first song
Side B
Living on My Own by Queen. I adore this song. It always makes me smile. I enjoy listening to Queen, they have something about their music that just makes it enjoyable and relaxing.
I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor. Can’t help but sing along with this song. It’s a wonderful sing along song especially when your drunk and in a club dancing away.
Tease me by Chaka Demus Pliers. Odd song.
10 years asleep I have no idea the real song title or the singer. The words are ‘It wouldn’t have happened to another world, it couldn’t have happened to a nicer planet. It wouldn’t have happened to another world, so don’t pretend to care when you don’t’. It’s an interesting song. I quite enjoy listening to it. The guy singing it is quite talented and can hit the low notes cleanly and then spring back up again, still with a nice clean voice. A refreshing change.
Hold On For One More Day by Wilson Philips. You see the name and would assume it was a male, it’s not. This is a female singer and I do like the voice. It’s very fresh. I have often sung this song to myself when things get tough for me. ‘I know that there is pain, But you hold on for one more day and break free the chains. Yeah I know that there is pain, but you hold on for one more day and you, break free, break from the chains.’ The whole song can bring words of comfort to people for may different reasons.
Tribal Dance by 2 Unlimited. I do wonder what was going through my head. I don’t even like techno music, I didn’t really back then. Except when I went to rolla-rama which was a Sunday morning disco for those who could skate.
When I’m good and ready by Sybil. There is something really sweet about this song. Nothing fantastic about the music nor the lyrics but I do enjoy this song, particularly the beginning. Very 80s feel.
This is it by Dannii Minogue. It’s amazing just how like her sister she sounds.
If I can’t have you by Sweet Box. Quite a typical 80s song, nothing fantastic about it. Until you’ve drunk too much and your in a club. Then it’s a great song to dance to.
Somewhere by Efua. If you ever get a chance do listen to this song, it’s just plain strange. I don’t know if it’s a good song or a really bad song. It’s certainly a song that could clear the dancefloor. I had completely forgotten about this song, it does amaze me that I taped it but then my taste in music has changed.
Shout by to be honest I don’t have a clue and by putting in shout to the search engine is just crazy because this song has been covered hundreds of times. This version has a reggae feel to it. Not bad, but no one can do it like Lulu and it’s just not the same without the little vocal thing she does at the beginning that makes everyone know that it’s shout.
Come Undone by Duran Duran. I had so forgotten about this song. It’s so different from all other Duran Duran songs I remember that I didn’t twig that this was them until I looked it up. It’s a haunting song, a so simple. Backing vocals really help to give it that haunted feel. Brilliant.
West End Girls by East 17. I did have a thing for East 17, I do believe I have two of their albums which will come up during our journey through my music taste. Even today I enjoy a canny few of their songs from various different albums. I have to say that when first heard the Pet Shop Boys version I was annoyed that they copied it from East 17, little did I know that East 17 had taken it from the Pet Shop Boys. Although I’m not convinced that PSBs did this song first.
