Hart's War

posted Mon 27 Jun 05
I hate this new set up..... I posted and published this yesterday, but according to blog-city this is just a draft..... damn it!

Hart's War is not the sort of film I would normally watch. I don't like war films, regardless if they are fighting or trying to escape from a camp. I don't think there is a single war film I have watched and like. Although M.A.S.H. wasn't too bad, nor was that Clint Eastwood and Donald Sutherland movie, Kelly's heros, or something like that. Even saying that, I would not own these movies, and I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to watch these movies, I would watch them because someone else is watching them and I had nothing better to do with my time.

But once again I digress. The reason I watched, and own Hart's War is because of a certain actor. An actor I admire a great deal, whom I never got to meet, whom took his own life around 19 months ago. The person I'm talking about, I'm sure many of you can guess. The man I am talking about is Jonathan Brandis. He was in this film. You can't miss him, he'd put on a bit of weight in this film, but you could never, ever hide his piercing blue eyes. Each time I watch this film, I feel pain and regret. This film was what Jonathan thought would be his "come back". He had high hopes for this film, unfortunatly not only did this film flop at the box office, most of Jonathan's scenes ended up on the cutting room floor. I can't even start to imagine what that must have made him feel like. The hurt, the anger but most of all the disappointment of it all. For those who care, if you get the DVD version you can see the great scenes that were cut out of the film. They are Jonathan's scenes. On is of his charactor lighting his farts, and another is where he's giving Hart (Colin Farrell) and Terrence Dashon Howard a hard time over the case. I won't go too much into the film in case you've not seen it and you would like to see it.

Each time I watch this film, I see Jonathan, and I can only imagine how excited that he got work as an adult actor, along side Colin Farrell and Bruce Willis. How hard he must have worked for this film, only to have his part cut in the final editing. Wil Wheaton talked about how he felt when he got cut from Nemesis, Jonathan must have felt similar. I ended up with tears forming because this film causes me to feel many emosions. Happiness because Jonathan is there on my screen doing what he wanted to do, sadness because he will never be in a new film again, anger because he's scenes go cut.

I still get annoyed at myself because Jonathan has this effect over me, a Man I never met and I morn for. Why? I wouldn't have it any other way though. Jonathan was a talented actor, there are very few who can act like him. His intesity, his passion, and most of all his ability to make you believe that you are not watching Jonathan playing a charactor, you are watching a charactor, in fact most of the time I forget I'm watching a film at all, he sucks me in there completely. I don't think there are many actors who can do that, I think the only one who comes even close to that is Mr. Shane West.
